St. James, McMinnville
St. James Parish, McMinnville, is one of the oldest in Oregon, established in 1875. The structure pictured here is actually the third St. James Church. The first church was built in 1875 and dedicated by Archbishop Blanchet on June 20, 1876. Father J.J. Dols, a missionary priest was the first pastor. The original structure was replaced and blessed January 17, 1915. Sadly, this church burned in 1917.
In 1878, Father P.F. Gibney took charge and was succeeded in 1881 by Father J.S. White who remained until 1887.
In 1906, under the pastorship of Father Burri, the parochial school was opened in charge of the Sisters of St. Francis of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with Sister Claire as Superior.
From 1908 to 1915, Fr. Charles Raymond was pastor. It was under his direction that the second church was built. This remarkable man has had a wonderful history written about his life by Fr. Martinus Cawley, OCSO, of Lafayette, OR. Fr. Raymond was also known as the "Singing Priest" of Siletz and later would be pastor of Raymond Town later known as Ocean Lake and now Lincoln City.
While this is primarily the records for St. James, there are also records included for St. John, Yamhill, St. Jacob, Lafayette and St. Patrick, Muddy Valley. The records for these parishes are incorporated with the St. James records.
The records contained in our database for St. James are, Baptisms 1876 - 1903, Deaths 1876 - 1953, and Marriages 1876 - 1953.
St. James was the 18th Catholic parish dedicated in Oregon.
