St. John The Baptist, Milwaukie
The first mission church of St. John the Baptist, Milwaukie, OR was dedicated July 23, 1864. It remained a mission for 47 years and was served from Oregon City, St. Francis and the Cathedral in Portland, until the Benedictine Fathers took charge in 1894. The Benedictines served the mission until 1911 at which time it was made a parish. The first wooden church was located at 21st and Washington Streets on Lots 2 and 3 in Block 37 and had a seating capacity of about sixty persons.
In 1912, the parish purchased an acre of land on the Southeast corner of 25th and Monroe Streets and a new larger church, 44 by 92 feet was completed on this site by Reverend T. J. Daum.
For a number of years, Oswego and later Estacada were served as missions by Father Bernards from Milwaukie.
In the spring of 1919 a two room school was built; it was opened on September 8, 1919 with sixty pupils in attendance and the Sisters of St. Mary in charge.
At this time we have only marriage records for this parish, we plan to add Baptism and Deaths soon.
St. John's was the 14th Catholic parish dedicated in Oregon.
