Cumulative Indexes to Munnicks Catholic Church Records
St. Joseph's, Salem
Salem, known to early Oregonians as Chemeketa, was visited by the pioneer missionaries and as early as 1853, Rev. James Croke, first pastor of Portland, made an effort to rent a hall so that regular services might be held.
Then on April 10, 1864, the first Catholic church in Salem was dedicated by Archbishop Blanchet under the title of St. John the Evangelist. At the time of the dedication Rev. Louis Dielman was pastor.
The church pictured here on our web site was dedicated March 24, 1889 by Archbishop Gross under the new title of St. Joseph. It was razed in April, 1955 and the third church was dedicated March 19, 1953 by Archbishop Howard.
The Sacred Heart Mission, and the Chemawa Indian School were also served by St. Joseph's as well as Independence, Oregon. Independence dedicated its first church in 1910.
The death records in our database have a twenty nine year gap, for some inexplicable reason, with records ending in 1924 and one entry in 1933. Evidently when the records were filmed these years were missed or filmed on another roll and not indexed. There was a notation in the records when the filming was done to this effect and we will do more research to find out where they might be.
The records contained in our database for St. Joseph's are, Baptism's 1886-1903, Death's 1886-1933 and Marriage's 1886-1953. The earlier records from the date the parish was established in 1864 will be found in Munnick's works as well as the early marriage and death records.
St. Joseph's was the 12th Catholic parish dedicated in Oregon.
