St. Mary Star of the Sea, Astoria
|
|
Established in 1848 St. Mary's was a mission called Immaculate Conception. Then in 1851 a permanent mission known as St. Michael's and according
to Archdiocesan records, the first church was built October 11, 1874 by Archbishop Blanchet and renamed St. Mary, Star of the Sea. The church pictured here is the second
church built in May, 1903. Of special interest, the foundation was the work of 36 members of Battery C., Second U.S. Artillery, stationed at Fort Stevens, which permitted the purchase of the church
property in 1868. It's unclear where the original structure was since this property wasn't purchased until 1868.
In 1874 an elementary school was opened and in 1896 a second school was built and run by the Sisters of the Holy Names.
St. Mary's Hospital, Astoria, was established in 1880 run by the Sisters of Providence. A new building was erected in 1905 and there have been more
recent structures to replace the original.
Our records include not only the parish records but the hospital records as well. These records hold clues to families of one of the original settlements in Oregon and is very interesting research material.
Our Baptism dates are 1851-1902, Marriage 1851-1953, and Death 1874-1952.
St. Mary's was the 4th Catholic parish dedicated in Oregon.
