St. Mary's Cathedral in Portland was a parish with several structures and as many locations within the city of Portland.
In 1851, under the supervision of Rev. James Croke, a few hundred Portland inhabitants contributed about $600 towards the
construction of a Catholic Church. A plot of ground was secured from J.H. Couch in the vicinity of 6th and "D" Streets.
During the construction the few Catholics met for Mass at the residence of a Catholic family on Front Street between Taylor
and Salmon Streets.
February 22, 1852, the new church was finished sufficiently to be dedicated.
In 1862, Archbishop Blanchet moved his residence from Oregon City to Portland and St. Mary's became the Cathedral.
The picture you see above is before April 15, 1878 when this structure was dismantled. The original building was changed radically on
several occasions. The location also moved from 6th & "D" streets to 3rd & Stark. Structure changes occurred in 1864 and again in 1871.
In about 1878 this church building was raised and a temporary Cathedral was erected at 15th & Davis.
The records included in our database are Baptism's 1887-1901, Marriage's 1882-1951, and Death's 1884-1952.
St. Mary's was the 5th Catholic parish dedicated in Oregon.
