St. Mary's, Corvallis
|
|
As early as August, 1853, Father J. Croke visited the vicinity of Marysville, now Corvallis, and
celebrated a mass there.
St. Mary, the ever Immaculate and Blessed Virgin, Mother of God was the first parish church in
Corvallis and was blessed on February 17, 1861.
In order to build the first church, money needed to come from somewhere, and on the top of the donations
list dated, May 3, 1860, is the name of the Archbishop Francois Norbert Blanchet, giving $100.00. The soldiers at Ft. Hoskins, 17 miles
west of Corvallis, pledged over $300.00. The entire cost of the first church was just over $1300.00. Two thirds of this cost was
donated, others gave gifts. One family gave wheat and another family gave a cow.
Since 1912 the old parish church of 1861, which is on the far right side of the above picture, is now
used as a hall for the benefit of the parish and also was used by the Catholic students of Oregon State University.
The original church was remodeled in 1922 and again later by Father Leipzig. On May 12, 1912 the new
and present church, shown on the left in the above picture, was dedicated.
The records contained in our database for St. Mary's are, Baptisms 1861 - 1902, Deaths 1874 - 1953, Marriages 1867 - 1953.
